In short
Layout slots are toggles and variants in the Layout tab: Header, Left sidebar, Right sidebar, Body, Footer, and Branding. Enable what your template needs and tune variants per breakpoint.

Slot reference

Slot
Typical use
HeaderTop bar — logo, primary nav, CTAs, search on docs sites
Left sidebarSection navigation, doc tree, persistent menu
Right sidebarTable of contents, page outline, secondary promos
BodyMain column — width, padding, where MDX content renders
FooterLegal links, secondary nav, copyright
BrandingLogo/wordmark treatment tied to layout chrome
Disable slots you do not need — a landing page often turns off both sidebars.

Header

Configure which header variant your template uses (style differs by template family). Common options include wordmark, nav links sourced from the site tree, and action buttons. Header nav usually follows published page structure and manual sort order.

Sidebars

Left sidebar — primary doc navigation built from collections and pages. Right sidebar — optional page table of contents or widgets; some templates show heading anchors when enabled. On mobile breakpoints, sidebars often collapse into drawers — check mobile preview after changes.

Body

Controls max width, horizontal alignment, and vertical spacing for content. Narrower max width improves readability for long docs; full width suits landing heroes. Page MDX renders inside the body slot when the slot is enabled.

Footer

Enable for site-wide links (privacy, terms, social). Footer content may come from layout config or site settings depending on template.

Metadata block

Separate from slots but related — the metadata block shows page title, summary, tag, and cover above body content. Toggle in layout or page settings.

Page navigation

The prev/next links at the bottom of an article are configured in Layout → Site navigation, alongside their width.
Format
Shows
CompactChevron and the sibling page title
DetailedAdds the sibling page's cover thumbnail and summary
Detailed reads the neighbouring page's cover image and summary from its page settings — pages without them fall back to the title on its own.

Per-page slot overrides

In Page settings → Layout overrides, hide header or sidebars for one-off landings (e.g. campaign page without nav).

Common patterns

Site type
Suggested slots
DocumentationHeader + left sidebar + body; optional right TOC
BlogHeader + body; sidebar optional for archives
Landing / spotlightHeader + body only; footer minimal
PortfolioHeader + body; full-bleed media in content
